York University English Language Institute (YUELI)
The Academic Program is YUELI's university preparation program. It is a full-time, 7-level program for non-native speakers of English. Levels 1-3 focus on helping build a solid foundation of English proficiency in all four language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking. Levels 4, 5b, 5a and 6 focus on the kinds of language, critical thinking and study skills required to be a successful student in a university or college setting where English is the language of instruction.
The Summer Language Program: Experience York is an intensive 4-week program that provides students with an opportunity to develop their English skills and to experience life at York University, one of Canada's largest universities, located in Toronto, Ontario. Students will participate daily in a Language Development Class and also be able to select their own Language Option Class. Language Option Classes include academic lectures, speaking and listening, and IELTS/TOEFL preparation. Extra-curricular activities, designed to provide students with an opportunity to experience the cultural attractions offered in Toronto and the local area, are an integral part of the program. As this is an intensive course, students are obliged to use English in and out of the classroom. For maximum exposure to language learning opportunities, students are advised to live in residence.
YUELI also offers specialized language support for students preparing for graduate studies. The York Pre-Graduate Preparation Program (YP3) is designed for international students who are interested in attending graduate studies at North American universities. The program runs 8 months and is divided into two terms (of 20 classroom hours per week). It is comprised of courses in test preparation, listening, speaking, and presentation skills, and academic reading and writing, plus a final project. In addition, the program features frequent personal encounters with professors and graduate students, visits to a number of university campuses and graduate programs throughout southern Ontario, and focused help with participants’ individual graduate program search and applications. Through these encounters, participants can build the professional and academic skills they will need not just to survive, but to succeed in graduate study.
