The University of Prince Edward Island

UPEI logoLocated in picturesque Charlottetown, the birthplace of Canadian Confederation, the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) has a rich history, with roots in two predecessor institutions: Prince of Wales College (est. 1834) and St. Dunstan’s University (est. 1855). Established in 1969, UPEI honours its proud legacy through a growing reputation for research innovation and academic excellence. UPEI’s four faculties (arts, education, science, and veterinary medicine) and two schools (business and nursing) offer a wide range of programs and degrees to almost 4,600 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. Home to seven Canada Research Chairs, a Canada Excellence Research Chair in Aquatic Epidemiology, eight endowed or sponsored research chairs, and five 3M Teaching Award-winners, UPEI offers its students access to over 1,100 exceptional faculty and research staff. International students from 61 countries comprise more than 12 per cent of the University’s total enrolment.

UPEI Standout Programs

  • Veterinary Medicine: UPEI is home to one of only five veterinary colleges in Canada. The faculty of science offers a pre-veterinary stream so that students are well-positioned to gain entrance into the doctor of veterinary medicine program
  • Business: Co-operative programs allow students to combine academic studies with practical work experience
  • Island Studies: This master’s program is unique in Canada for its interdisciplinary approach to issues facing island communities. International exchange programs in places like Malta and Fiji are featured in this program
  • Wildlife Conservation: Includes foundational science courses, marine biology, biodiversity and conservation biology

UPEI Highlights

  • UPEI has over $4.4 million in scholarships
  • International students are paired with Canadian students to help them feel at home from the moment they arrive on campus
  • UPEI business students consistently earn top marks in regional, national and international case competitions.
